Taurus is the only candidate, in any city-wide race, that has a working, living plan for workforce development, wealth, and cleaner communities. To view the plan please click "Find out more" below.
Education is key to becoming an upstanding and productive citizen. Our children deserve the best education possible. Many of our schools still have inadequate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). As councilman, Taurus will visit every school in the district before the school year starts to ensure that there is adequate HVAC.
Taurus will advocate for more vocational education and training programs in schools. There are many construction jobs in Baltimore. Many young adults that live in Baltimore are unable to gain employment in construction because they are not trained.
Taurus will advocate for apprenticeships in high schools for the Baltimore Police and Fire Departments. There is a big shortage and many officers do not come from the communities in which they serve.
Taurus’ children attend school in the district so fighting for the best education possible is top priority.
Baltimore has a plethora of jobs and resources. Many citizens are uninformed about job openings and resources. Even as we go through this COVID-19 pandemic there are still jobs that are currently hiring. A proactive solution Taurus has created is a job and resource social media platform @BaltimoreJobs on Instagram. Instagram is the largest social media platform for young adults. Through the platform Taurus post jobs, resources, and recruits for various GED programs. In 8 months the page had garnered over 20 thousand followers. Hundreds have gained employment and new access to resources.
Taurus actively works with The Mayor’s Office of Employment Development recruiting for various events.
Baltimore has over 100,000 residents over age 25 that did not graduate high school. Taurus uses the @BaltimoreJobs platform to recruit for many GED programs. Taurus will bring jobs and resources directly to District 6.
Taurus has been leading the charge to clean Baltimore City neighborhoods. Taurus is the co-founder of the Baltimore Beautification Project (BBP). BBP hires underprivileged individuals to clean the community. BBP has conducted many large-scale cleanups of illegally dumped trash. In 2019 BBP spent close to $10K cleaning illegally dumped locations. This money came directly from the pockets of Taurus and BBP's other cofounder Vijay Chokshi.
Taurus is committed to conducting a monthly community cleanup in District 6. The Department of Public Works and illegal dumpers will be held accountable under Taurus’ leadership. Taurus has a goal to educate and change the culture of the community in regards to trash. Taurus will bring back the Afro Clean Block concept. Block parties and different incentives will be given to communities that actively cleans up trash. Taurus will advocate to bring back trash pick up for twice a week.
Park Heights has been receiving millions of dollars for redevelopment that has gone unnoticed and missing. Many plans, promises and hopes for redevelopment has not occurred. Park Heights needs a leader that will ensure that the millions of dollars for redevelopment are actually being used to redevelop the community. There has been a lack of accountability. Park Heights also needs a leader that will ensure that when redevelopment occurs the construction jobs that become available are given to individuals from the community that are in need of employment. Further Park Heights needs a leader that will ensure that when new houses are built members from the community have first access to purchasing the homes.
Taurus has been leading the charge to assist and support squeegee workers.
In 2019 Taurus issued a #HireASqueegeeBoyChallenge where he challenged other businesses to start hiring the squeegee workers. Since this challenge many local businesses have began reaching out and hiring squeegee workers.
The squeegee issue is part of the deeply rooted issues that have been ignored for decades and generations. Baltimore City needs a program with wrap around services for all young adults that are in need of help. Squeegee workers are a small percentage of young adults we see that are in need help. There are many other young adults that we do not see that are in need of the same support as squeegee workers.
As councilman Taurus will create a District 6 Community Action Team (CAT). The duties of CAT will be to engage all individuals that are seen consistently loitering in front of businesses and in neighborhoods. CAT will offer jobs, job training, GED, counseling, therapy, expungement, and other resources. This team will meet people where they are at. This type of outreach is needed in many communities of District 6.
We need this type of service in our communities because loitering is the biggest issue for many businesses in District 6. Also so many people are hopeless and feel helpless. It is time that we start meeting people where they are at getting them the help they need.
